چکیده

[1] Multi-decadal trends in the advection, mixing, and airsea flux of natural carbon dioxide (CO2) in the Southern Ocean are investigated using output from a hindcast simulation of a non-eddy-resolving ocean model. Particular emphasis is placed on the model’s improved eddy-induced advection parameterization. From 1958 to 2007, the model predicts a significant increase in the outgassing of natural CO2 from the Southern Ocean, congruent with a positive trend in the wind speed over this period. The natural CO2 flux trend is largely driven by enhanced Eulerian-mean advection and diapycnal mixing of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) into the Southern Ocean surface. The natural CO2 flux trend would be larger, if not for an increase in the eddy-induced advection of DIC out of the Southern Ocean surface, caused by the multi-decadal increase in the model’s eddy-induced advection coefficient. Natural variability in the surface ocean carbonate ion concentration

We investigate variability in the surface ocean carbonate ion concentration ([CO 3 ]) on the basis of a long control simulation with an Earth System Model. The simulation is run with a prescribed, pre-industrial atmospheric CO2 concentration for 1000 years, permitting investigation of natural [CO 3 ] variability on interannual to multi-decadal timescales. We find high interannual variability in...

Errors in Estimated Temporal Tracer Trends Due to Changes in the Historical Observation Network : A Case Study of Oxygen Trends in the Southern Ocean

Several models predict large and potentially abrupt ocean circulation changes due to anthropogenic greenhouse-gas emissions. These circulation changes drive-in the models-considerable oceanic oxygen trend. A sound estimate of the observed oxygen trends can hence be a powerful tool to constrain predictions of future changes in oceanic deepwater formation, heat and carbon dioxide uptake. Estimati...

Model Assessment of Decadal Variability and Trends in the Tropical Pacific Ocean

In this report, global coupled ocean–atmosphere models are used to explore possible mechanisms for observed decadal variability and trends in Pacific Ocean SSTs over the past century. The leading mode of internally generated decadal (.7 yr) variability in the model resembles the observed decadal variability in terms of pattern and amplitude. In the model, the pattern and time evolution of tropi...

Recent trends in the Southern Ocean eddy field

Eddies in the Southern Ocean act to moderate the response of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) to changes in forcing. An updated analysis of the Southern Ocean satellite altimetry record indicates an increase in eddy kinetic energy (EKE) in recent decades, contemporaneous with a probable decrease in ACC transport. The EKE trend is largest in the Pacific (14.96 4.1 cm s per decade) and Ind...

Long-Term Trends of Nutrients and Apparent Oxygen Utilization South of the Polar Front in Southern Ocean Intermediate Water from 1965 to 2008

The variation of nutrients over decadal timescales south of the polar front in the Southern Ocean is poorly known because of a lack of continuous observational data in this area. We examined data from long-term continuous hydrographic monitoring of 43 years (1965-2008) in the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean, via the resupply of Antarctic stations under the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedi...
